This Advent, as we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ, He beckons us, “Draw near.” And Advent, being the beginning of the new church calendar year, is an opportunity to do just that.  To draw near with a fresh slate, to get a closer look of His goodness and sovereignty.

He is Emmanuel, God with us.  And as such, he has drawn infinitely near to us.  He is a God who knows our thoughts from afar, who has experienced the breadth of human experience as we have. Will we lean into that closeness this Advent season?  Will we choose to draw near to Him?

Just as we draw near to Jesus, we have an opportunity to draw near to our church family this season.  Writers from both Wellspring Network churches, Littleton and Englewood, have come together to bring the word to both communities. Folks from both congregations will read the same passages of Scripture on the same day, we will have a chance to draw near to the Lord and to each other.

As any proper Anglicans would, we are using our beloved Book of Common Prayer as a guide for this season of Advent.  We have selected our scripture based on the Daily Office Lectionary, so if the readings seem random, they in fact have been in use for hundreds of years.  The Daily Office Lectionary is meant to help us emulate Saint Paul’s rhythm of “prayer without ceasing.”  The readings, which may seem a lot per day, are not meant to be read all during one ten minute quiet time, but sprinkled throughout our day as the monastic hours once were.  They are traditionally read at morning and evening, but can be spread out to be read every few hours.  The Psalms are even arranged so that if you read the Daily Lectionary each day from Advent through Epiphany, you will have made your way through the entire book of Psalms (that’s actually a great starting point if you are overwhelmed, just read the Psalm portion, split up the verses so they are scattered centerings throughout your day).

You can find the prayer book pages for the Daily Office Lectionary online at http://www.bcponline.org/DOLectionary/Advent.htm

Or in your Book of Common Prayer on page 934 and following (we are beginning at Year One)

We hope you will join us on the Wellspring app as we Draw Near to the Lord and each other this Advent!  The devotional content will be live after church on the First Sunday of Advent, November 29th!
