The season of Advent begins the church calendar. For many of us Advent stands as a count down to Christmas. Much like the chocolate countdown calendars from when I was a child, we light Advent candles as a countdown for the big event of Christmas. Christmas is where the real action happens. We get to open up presents which remind us of the greatest gift ever given, Christ, we get to spend time with family and loved ones, we get to sing our favorite songs, we get to watch our favorite movies, we get time off of work, it's an amazing season. However, this is only half of the picture of Advent. In Advent, we recognize that we sit between the two comings of Christ. We celebrate his first coming at Christmas, but we also long for his second coming when he returns to make all things new. Just as we wait with expectation for the celebration of Christ's birth, how much more should we await and long for the Return of Christ where he will come again to wipe away every tear, cure every disease, end every war, and reunite us with our long lost loved ones.

This Advent season let us enter into a time of expectation which moves beyond the desire for presents and Charlie Brown movies. This Advent season let us enter into a season where we long for and have a deep expectation for the Second Advent of Christ.

Where does your longing lie? Do you hope in a stress free Christmas? Do you hope in a larger bonus than last year? Do you hope in a child finally behaving on Christmas day? Or is your hope set in the risen Christ who will return one day to make all things new?

This Advent, I want to encourage you to enter into a disciplined longing for Christ's return. Whether that's through using our Advent devotional, another Advent devotional, or a private Bible reading and prayer plan. May this Advent become a time of longing for the greatest celebration the world will ever know, the return of the King.
