Some of you are aware that the Wellspring Network is a member of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).  The ACNA is deeply committed to biblical faithfulness and the mission of the Gospel.  The ACNA was formed as a response to the crisis of leadership in the Episcopal Church USA and their revisionist stance on scripture and matters of human sexuality.

From January 11-15, 2016, the senior bishops (Primates) of the 38 Anglican Provinces gathered in Canterbury for a historic meeting.   A key agenda item was a discussion concerning the recent change to the historic and biblical doctrine of marriage by the Episcopal Church USA.

The end result of the meeting was groundbreaking.  The Episcopal Church has been effectively suspended for 3 years.  They are not able to serve on ecumenical bodies or be elected or appointed to decision-making bodies of the Anglican Communion.  The suspension means that the Episcopal Church has been reduced to observer status.   The Primates had this to say, “It is our unanimous desire to walk together. However, given the seriousness of these matters, we formally acknowledge this distance by requiring that for a period of three years the Episcopal Church no longer represent us on ecumenical and interfaith bodies, should not be appointed or elected to an internal standing committee and that while participating in the internal bodies of the Anglican Communion, they will not take part in decision making on any issues pertaining to doctrine or polity.” —Anglican Communion News Service.

What does this mean for us?

Put simply, this signifies the growing influence of the theologically conservative Global South, which represents the majority of Anglicans around the world, as well as showcasing the growing influence of orthodox Anglicans in the West like the ACNA.

It can feel challenging in our day to stay lovingly engaged in the culture without compromising the Gospel. However, our call as followers of Christ is to proclaim his saving grace, which also requires us to speak out on matters of sin. This is a difficult task, a challenging task, a task none of us can do on our own. However, we believe that through the power of the Spirit, God is at work to convict and call the world to salvation. May we never lose hope that our God is at work in the world.
