Wellspring Englewood

Late last year, The Well sponsored a sock drive within Wellspring’s congregation.  We wanted to be prepared to tangibly serve the homeless population of Englewood throughout the winter, and giving socks to people living on the streets is a great way to make sure they maintain healthy, warm feet throughout these cold, wet months.

The response to the sock drive was nothing short of amazing.  You all blew our expectations away with your generosity.  Even the broader community contributed: Wellspring member Susan Romanyshyn, a teacher at Stony Creek Elementary School, and her students donated socks alongside us.  Together, we collected over 700 pairs!  With such an enormous amount of socks to give away, not only were we able to give them to our regular attenders down in The Well, but we were also able to get creative about ways to reach out to a broader range of people experiencing homelessness.  Here’s how:

At Wellspring’s Advent party several months ago, The Well ran an activity station at which participants created care-packages for people living on the streets.  Each package consisted of several toiletry items, a few small food items, a personalized note, and a pair of socks.  All of these items are absolutely essential to the task of living on the streets throughout the winter.  After each package was created, the person who created it kept it with them and was encouraged to give it to the next person they saw begging on the street.  This idea was met so enthusiastically that several members of Wellspring now make a habit out of carrying similar packages (or just socks) with them in their cars and handing them out on a regular basis.  Giving such a tangible item both communicates genuine care for the homeless and avoids the unanswered questions that go along with giving money to people on the streets.

Overall, thanks to your generosity and faithfulness, we have been able to give fresh, clean socks to anybody who needs them on Sunday mornings on a regular basis for the past three months.  Additionally, we have been able to get creative in our attempts to effectively serve a broad range of individuals who might never have interacted with Wellspring, or been shown the love of Christ, before.  The great news is, the fun is not over yet!  As the picture below shows, we still have a substantial amount of socks to give away.  So, if you’re interested in joining the group of people who keep care packages in their cars to give away, feel free to come visit us down in The Well sometime!  We would love to walk you through the process of creating these packages (and give you some socks to get you started!). So, thank you so much for your overwhelming generosity and love for those who are underserved.  Who knew socks could be so much fun?
